Ark of Taste Heirlooms Available at the 2016 Seed Swap
Slow Food Utah will be participating in the annual 9th West Farmers Market Seed Swap on Saturday, February 6th. The swap will be held at the Sorenson Unity Center in Salt Lake City, 1383 S. 900 W., from 4 – 7 pm. You don’t have to bring your own seeds to the swap to attend. During the event, you can also learn about gardening, seed saving, and food preservation from local organizations and experts, either through informal conversations or at the workshops.
Slow Food Utah will once again offer select Ark of Taste heirloom vegetable seed varieties in sampler packages for any interested gardeners to take home and try growing out. These include Red Fig and Brandywine tomatoes, Sheepnose Pimento, Beaver Dam, and Wenk’s Yellow Hot peppers, Amish Deer Tongue lettuce and Sibley squash. The seeds we’ll be giving away come from Seed Savers Exchange, and most are certified organic. All varieties are open-pollinated heirlooms that meet the Ark of Taste’s standards of culinary and cultural value.
Chapter member Jen Colby will be leading a workshop from 5:15 – 6 pm about the Ark of Taste, Saving Seeds to Preserve Biodiversity. Come learn more about the Ark, the importance of heirloom seeds, and how you can help keep food traditions alive and delicious through your own gardening and seed saving activities.
